Here at Tri-Cities TN Home we are always looking for promising developments in our industry. We have recently come across an event that has us genuinely excited for the future of home building right here in the Tri-Cities. It’s called the “Battle of the Build,” and we want to share my thoughts on why this is more than just a competition; it’s a cornerstone for the future of quality homes in our area.
Building the Future: A Look at the Tri-Cities’ Battle of the Build
For those of you who are not familiar with it, the Battle of the Build® is a fantastic initiative put on by the Johnson City Area Home Builders Association. At its heart, it is a competition where local high school students from across Northeast Tennessee showcase their skills in trades like construction, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work. These students, guided by mentors from our local building community, design and create projects that are then judged by national experts.
This is not just another school fair. We’re talking about a serious display of talent and craftsmanship. The students are judged on presentation, build quality, finish quality, creativity, and complexity. It’s a comprehensive evaluation that mirrors the real-world demands of the building industry. The themes for the competition, like “Indoor Living” and “Outdoor Entertainment,” push the students to think practically and creatively about how we live in our homes.

Why the Battle of the Build Matters
Now, you might be wondering, “Why is this so important?” The answer is simple: workforce development. We have a growing need for skilled tradespeople in the home building industry. Events like the Battle of the Build are crucial for inspiring the next generation to pursue these vital careers. It’s a direct, hands-on way to show young people that a career in the trades is not only a viable option but a path to a successful and fulfilling profession.
From a technical standpoint, the skills being fostered at this event are the very foundation of a quality-built home. The precision required for excellent carpentry, the complexity of modern HVAC systems, and the critical importance of safe and efficient electrical work are all on display. By encouraging and celebrating these skills, we are investing in the future quality and integrity of homes in the Tri-Cities.
A Community Event for Everyone
The Battle of the Build is more than just a competition for the students; it’s a community event. It’s an opportunity for all of us to see the incredible talent that is being nurtured in our local schools. It’s also a chance to connect with local builders, and trades professionals, and maybe even get inspired for your own home projects.

This year, the event will be held on Saturday, November 8th, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Appalachian Fairgrounds in Gray, TN. Alongside the student competition, there will be a Holiday Artisan Market, making it a great event for the whole family. We strongly encourage you to attend. Come out, see the projects, talk to the students, and support the future of our local building industry. You won’t be disappointed.
The Battle of the Build is where we can see the passion and potential of the next generation of builders for the Tri-Cities. It’s an investment in our community, and in the future of the homes we will all live in. We will see you there.
